Photographer Retts Wood catches a candid glimpse of the world behind the flashing bulbs at the most glamorous film festival of the year

The Cannes Film Festival is without doubt the most prestigious event of its kind in the world. Founded in 1946, for the past seven decades it has welcomed the greatest names – and yachts – in film to its glittering promenade, to preen in the flashbulbs of a million paparazzi and to compete frenziedly for the illustrious Palme d’Or. Photographer Retts Wood covered the cavalcade for AnOther, bypassing the circus surrounding the red carpet events, taking instead a series of quiet portraits of a number of the most interesting characters at the festival. From the 25 year old Canadian actor/director Xavier Dolan, whose film “Mommy” won him the Jury Prize, shared with Jean Luc Godard, and Charlotte Gainsbourg with director Asia Argento, to rising star Sam Claflin, in town as part of the "Hunger Games" cavalcade, to a hungover Matt Smith recovering from the premiere of Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River in which he stars, AnOther presents a picture of Cannes that is a step away from the prism of hard glamour we are used to.
