Over a two-year period, between 2002 and 2004, Anders Edström photographed drips, blobs and pools of paint on white board at close range in London. The resulting pictures convey a sense of intimacy that is apparent throughout his work when he more commonly depicts interactions between people and environments. “Subject matter, whatever it is, only serves sensibility.” Says Bennett Simpson, associate curator at the Museum of contemporary Art in Los Angeles about Edström’s images, which appear together in the recently published book Safari. “His work reflects the contingencies of contemporary life as much as a fascination with close nature.” Perhaps this is to be expected as fashion work has been a constant of Edström’s photography, having worked closely with designer Marting Margiela in the Nineties and become an influential photographer for magazines such as Purple, Self Service and AnOther.

Here we present an exclusive edit of images, selected by Edström from Safari and he explains in simple terms how the work came about.

Anders Edström: One day, I was in the garden painting a shelf for my son’s room. As I was stirring the paint, I found myself hypnotised by the different reflections, patterns and textures.
