Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington practise their keepy-uppies in this week’s most Loved image, from Chanel’s S/S91 ad campaign

Chanel has long established a name for itself as a provider of chic sporting goods – a Chanel bicycle, for example, which comes complete with quilted messenger bags, or a collection of fabulous carbon fibre surfboards – but this effervescent shot of Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista doing keepy-uppies from the brand’s S/S91 ad campaign surely tops them all. The photograph, which is a celebration of 90s fashion at its most joyful, was our most Loved this week, selected by AnOthermag.com's Fashion Features Editor Olivia Singer.

“I met Linda at Steven Meisel’s studio in New York,” Christy Turlington once said in an interview. “She lived in Paris, and she was just a couple of years older than me, but she came in like this woman. She was so beautiful, so sexy, so sophisticated. She had this long dark hair and incredible eyes, and she had on boots that went to here. I remember thinking, ‘wow’.” Turlington and Evangelista were to become one of Chanel’s most photographed pairs, epitomising the golden era of the supermodel in limitless campaigns and photoshoots. All of which makes this momentary glimpse into their joyful kick-about for the SS91 campaign even more of a jewel. Here’s Singer on why she selected the image.

Why did you love the Chanel S/S91 football ad?
Because, as well as being super chic, it subverts gender tropes: my favourite combination.

How many keepy-uppies could you do in those leather motorcycle boots?
At least a hundred, in any shoes.

If you could don this Chanel S/S91 ensemble, where would you wear it and what would you do?
I would play football in it, of course.

Who would you prefer to go for a cocktail with: Christy Turlington or Linda Evangelista?
Christy Turlington, because she’s a raging feminist – she set up a non-profit to support maternal care around the world, and made a really great documentary about it all.

If you could ask Karl Lagerfeld to put Chanel’s inimitable stamp on one sport, which would it be? Why?
American football. I’ve just finished watching Friday Night Lights and I think the only thing that could make Tim Riggins more attractive is if he had a Chanel helmet.

What’s the last thing you bought?
Patent leather black pumps from Miu Miu that make my feet look like those of a chic witch.

What are you looking forward to in the last weeks of September?
The progression of fashion week, of course – especially Gareth Pugh, Prada and Dior. It is a fairly all-consuming endeavour.
